The Yellow Wallpaper

This was a great short story I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The story had plenty of substance as well as symbolism. This story felt predictable to me. I do not know why because I have never read it before but by the time I was a third of the way in I had guessed the ending. However, despite that I really enjoyed reading this. This story progressed really well. The more patterns she found in the wallpaper the deeper she slipped into the grips of madness. The wallpaper was not only the cause for her madness but also a symbol for it. She noticed new things about the paper every day and night. She also says several times how frustrating the inconsistensies of the pattern are further showing the progression of her madness. The point at which the reader finally becomes aware that there is a serious problem is when she starts staying up all night looking at the wall paper and seeing the woman behind the pattern. I think John knew that she had a mental problem from the beginning. I say this because throughout the story he always encourages her not to "fill her head with fancies". This suggests that he is trying to preserve her ever shrinking capacity for rational thought. I think John realized that she had some form of neurosis fairly early on even before he brought his wife here. In fact I think his wife's neurosis was his reason for coming to this old mansion(or possibly mental hospital). I think he wanted a safe place for her to either heal or succumb to her madness. The reader is almost left to infer the ending of the story but not quite. There is enough evidence to suggest that she probably hung herself and that it was her spirit that creeped along the edge of the room and over the body of John.

sacrifice

The modern motion picture of today has become one of the biggest venues for entertainment in history. Movies are always made to turn a profit. However, movies are not always seen only in the quest entertainment. The films I refer to are of course mostly historical films. Historical films are great because they allow us see and almost feel what it felt like to be a part of that time period. The importance of historical accuracy should be the utmost especially in military film. To get some fact or detail out of place is a discredit to the men and women who served during that time. Pearl Harbor is iconic December 7, 1941 is a date blazed into the mind of every American young and old. That day was long considered the epitome of tragedy until 9/11/01. The attack on Pearl Harbor by the japanese was quick and a decisive victory. The movie Pearl Harbor is a portrayal of the life that goes on at the navy base at Pearl Harbor. The movie is centered around a squadron of fighter pilots specifically two Rafe, and Danny. Part of the movie is dedicated to a twisted love triangle between Rafe and Danny and woman. However, the largest part of the movie is geared towards the situation a pilot encounters during a time of war. The constant training the loss of friends and the very real possibility of being deployed for battle. The movie shows some of what the every day activities would have been like. This movie for me is great because I have always enjoyed history and I love those WWII fighter planes so I look forward to writing more on this event and this movie.

perspective

The commercials were interesting because it is amazing what you see in commercials when you actually pay attention. Most of the time the commercial is a shallow meaningless and overused scream for the viewers attention. Three of these commercials fit that bill. Two of them used sex as the basis for their ad and in both cases the product had absolutely nothing to do with sex. However, as everyone knows sex sells. I think the Wii vs. Playstation 3 was the perfect example of this. A video game console has nothing to do with a ditzy blonde in her barely-there clothes dancing and smacking her own butt. But,(no pun intended) I garuntee you that any guy who watched that commercial gave it his full undivided attention. I think its sad,and slightly funny, that many companies today choose to advertise something completely unrelated to their product just to sell their product. It is like the product is not good enough to sell itself so then they advertise some form of sex or a hot girl in a bikini and they cannot keep it on the shelves.
On the other side of the coin I loved the Dove commercial. The commercial is proof that beauty is skin deep. This commercial was great because it exposes the unrealistic perception of beauty that has swept across America since photoshop came about. I think that the concept of digital editing has taken away the value for individuality. All the faces in magazines are annoyingly flawless. Digital editing has taken away the small personal imperfections that make us who we are. The dove commercial showed the stages of making someone beautiful. The almost attractive woman sits down then she has make up put on and she is exceptionally pretty then the pictures are taken. After that the editor goes in and tries to make her perfect. That woman did not need digital editing in the slightest. However, the editor did not think that she was up to par with perfection so he went in and changed a few things. I think what Dove did with this commercial was great. This commercial could have an impact on a young lady who feels so much pressure to look a certain way when the people she is trying look like are not as perfect as they seem. Bravo to Dove for producing a unique and intresting commercial. Boo to the other three for giving me the same thing as everyone else

persuasion

The three speeches by Washington, Stanton, and Lincoln were all persuasive but they all based their persuasion on different tactics. Stanton's speech was more of an appeal to reason and logic. Lincoln's speech was an appeal to emotion and conviction. Washington's speech was a combination but I felt like it was directed more towards logical appeal than emotional. My favorite speech would definitely have to be Elizabeth Cady Stanton's. I liked this speech best because the whole thing is based on sound reasoning rather than sporadic emotion. However, I did feel that Stanton's speech could have been more concise and been just as effective. The Gettysburg address was my second favorite even barring its historical significance. This speech was emotionally moving because it related to the sacrifice of life. I think Lincoln knew that whatever he said could never have as much effect as what the presence of that battlefield said.Washington's speech was my least favorite it seemed to lack something the others had but I cannot put my finger on it. The Washington speech was well put together and the ship metaphor was good but this speech seemed to lack conviction on paper that was present in both the Lincoln and Stanton speeches. When I read the Washington speech it was like reading a newspaper article. While when I read the Stanton and Lincoln speech I could practically hear their voices. I do not know why the Washington speech was so dry to me but it had no feeling. Lincoln's had of course all the feeling in the world because of his location and emotional appeal. However, even Stanton's speech had conviction and she based her speech on the same appeal to reason as Washington. I guess I could hear Stanton speaking almost pleading with the world to listen to her logic. All three of the speeches were written with the purpose to persuade however I think that only two of them were effective. Washington left a lot to be desired.
